ON THE ISSUES

We can not help but bring our entire past into each  photograph we view. Every viewer has their own interpretation since it evokes memories and emotions from our past. I’ve been fortunate to have been allowed to enter so many lives for a brief moment and tell their story.  I bring that respect for the individuals to each picture I edit. Pictures can inform and educate as they surprise and delight.

Leveraging Technology for audience engagement

The Challenge:

ESPN wanted to reach and appeal to a younger video-gaming audience so their digital photography department hired me to photograph an E-Sports event and produce a photo story. I proposed creating an online 360-degree interactive video experience as well that would be more dynamic and fast-paced, giving the user more control. I was given the green light … then I had to figure out how to do it technically.

After a little research, I loaned a GoPro Omni 360° camera to shoot the video and purchased stitching software. A little more research into how to make Facebook, Youtube and their website play it correctly was all it took. The hard part was the time it took to render, which caused the ESPN editor and myself to have a very late dinner.

The Results:

The video had over 350,000 views in one day, ultimately gaining over a million views. Users were able to virtually experience a brief moment of the tournament in a more immersive, active way.

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera ...
they are made with the eye, heart, and head.

Moments of truth

As a photojournalist, I am recording moments that later become part of history and memory.
I’m capturing events and emotions that happen in a split second and would otherwise be lost in the fray and the passage of time.
It’s a great privilege, and a great responsibility, to make those images that are worth ‘a thousand words.’
